Mortality/Morbidity
Deaths caused by primary LSD effects have not been well documented. The lethal dose of LSD has been estimated to be 14,000 mcg. Few cases of massive ingestions have been reported; because of its large index of toxicity, patients must have access to unusually concentrated forms of LSD if they are to overdose. Massive overdoses can lead to respiratory arrest, coma, emesis, hyperthermia, autonomic instability, and bleeding disorders. No suicide attempts using LSD intoxication have been reported.

Cool, acidify with dilute sulfuric acid and shake in separatory funnel with 1 L ether. Discard the upper ether layer and filter with vacuum the aqueous suspension of lysergic acid (I).

2175. Madonna M NDE English expanded version 2/26/10. While ice skating with my sisters on a river approximately 1/4 mile from my childhood home in the countryside of southwester Ontario, on Valentine’s Day (a Sunday), Feb 23, 1966, I fell through a patch of thin ice, and fell deeply into freezing waters with a swiftly moving current. I felt no sense of needing to breathe, or of cold, but recall initially noticing how dark it was, relative to the bright winter’s day outside. Suddenly, I could see from above, myself falling. I will never forget the vision of myself in my yellow ski jacket and extra long striped scarf, my long blonde braids and scarf floating over my head. I was calm watching myself, no thinking anything strange of feeling anything but completely in control and serene. I spoke aloud these words: “I’d better get back down there.” Immediately I was back in my body, with a plan to allow myself to sink to the bottom and push off from there, looking toward the light. My thought was that the light was the break in the ice. I did just that, and with little effort made my way to the break in the ice. My sisters swear that I was under water for several minutes.

The diagram shown in Figure A was published in the New York Times on Dec. 10, 1980; two days after the shooting. The following text accompanied the diagram in the NYT:
